Mr. Lacayo-Valle introduced himself as the Assistant Band Director
Mr. Souza provided a Band Directors update focused on key events upcoming for the band

Upcoming Band Events:

oColumbus Parade – Oct. 11
oHome Football Game against S.I. at Kezar – Oct 16
oSanta Cruz Band Review – Oct. 17
oFoothill Band Review – Oct. 24
oJazz Coffee House  - October 28
oHome Football Game against Serra – Oct 31
oVeteran’s Day Parade – Nov. 8
oFairfield Band Review – Nov. 21
oChristmas Concert and Holiday Boutique – Dec 6

The band will play only the major football games this year and a smaller number of basketball games than in the past in an effort to limit the out of school time commitment for band members.

Mr. Souza provided an update on the possible Hawaii trip.  It is a hope that there will be an opportunity for a trip each year alternating between Disneyland (minor trip) and a Hawaii type trip (major), allowing two year marching band members to experience one or both trips.  The Hawaii trip will offer a host of performance activities, a number of educational opportunities and a visit to a Marianist university (Chaminade) that looks to recruit students from Riordan.  The cost of the Hawaii trip is significant and parents who would like assistance for their son to attend the trip should contact Mr. Souza directly.  There will be a number of opportunities for chaperones as this is a large group.

Mark Lieuw provided an update on the Color Guard activities which are proceeding very well.  Mike Day reported that he had seen the Color Guard practice and they looked great!

Mike Day provided an update on future band booster activities:
Holiday Boutique Concert  - Dec. 6 @ 1:30 pm
oFundraising – This is our only fundraiser of the year and so we really need to focus our efforts around this event.
- Each student is asked to provide a gift basket for our boutique – in the past this has been between $40 and $60 in value.
Wreath Sale – each student was asked to sell 2 wreaths each in the past.  Mike Day encouraged parents to sell additional wreath outside their immediate family to increase the dollars raised while limiting the additional expenditures on Riordan parents.
See’s Candy Sale – This has been another key fundraiser around the Christmas boutique.
Cookie Dough Sale
A flyer will be available shortly for parents to post in their local parish, break rooms at work etc.
oCommittees – Parents are asked to provide assistance in the following areas by signing up  for a committee to assist  with making this a successful event:
Set-up
Wreaths
Bows
Basket
Tickets/Program Handlers
Publicity
See’s Candies – Fill Orders
Refreshments
50/50 Raffle
Concert Video/Recording
Clean-up
At the next boosters meeting we will be seeking volunteers to lead/staff these groups
Need volunteer’s to work on Sept 12th, Saturday:
oUniforms fitting
oUniforms alterations
oCleaning uniforms hats

We will establish a time for the students to come in, this will likely be between 10 am and 2 pm and we may need to set some expectations as to when targeted students might arrive so we can stagger the work. It was mentioned that if we just pinned the pants, the alteration work could be done at anytime.

Volunteers were solicited for a phone tree regarding the Hawaii trip to canvas parents to see if they can make a commitment for their son to participate in the trip for head count purposes.  Deposits are due in September.

We will also be looking for parents to assist with some manual labor to refit the interior of the Band Trailer.
Mike mentioned that we always need chaperones at marching events to assist with logistics, travel with the band, make on-the-spot alterations and repairs, and provide support and hydration for the band members.

For reviews the boosters began a new program last year that provided food for all the band members, in order to provide approximately 110 meals, parents are needed to prepare food and set up the area in advance of the band completing the review.  This was a very well received program last year although it should be noted that anyone preparing food will generally miss the actual review.

Mike Day reviewed some Jazz education activities that we will evaluate for presentation to the school administration.

Next booster meeting will be on Tuesday, September 8th.

The meeting was adjourned at 7 pm
